The Psychobiology of Trauma and Resilience Across the Lifespan

Principal Investigator: Dean G. Kilpatrick, Ph.D.   <bio sketch>  < e-mail>
Funding Source:  National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
Dates of Project:  07/06 to 06/10

The proposed presentations within the 2007, 2008, and 2009 ISTSS Annual Meetings are designed to address several barriers to improved traumatic stress research and clinical practice that include:

  • fragmentation with respect to type of potentially traumatic events (PTE) studied
  • lack of knowledge of findings and implications of traumatic stress research conducted from different perspectives (e.g., behavioral genetics, psychosocial, biological)
  • failure to consider the development impact of PTEs experienced at different points in the lifespan
  • poor translation of research findings and their implications from traumatic stress researchers to clinical and public health practitioners.

Specific aims are to:

  • organize annual meetings that engage research, practice, and policy audiences in a discussion about genetic, biological, and psychosocial factors that influence traumatic stress, resilience, prevention, and treatment or trauma-related problems in an effort to educate these disparate audiences and to encourage the development of innovative treatment and research
  • integrate knowledge from genetic, biological, neuroscience, psychosocial, and public health perspectives to improve scientific knowledge and scientifically informed clinical practice and advocacy
  • disseminate information about key meeting themes and presentations to the scientific community via annual special issues of the Journal of Traumatic Stress (JTS) and to inform the public via news media coverage.
