Kilpatrick, Ph.D. <bio sketch> < e-mail> Funding Source: Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) Dates of Project: 09/06 to 02/08 Through this Project, the National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center at the Medical University of South Carolina will conduct an extensive national review of existing resources related to rape, its psychological impact, and related interventions, and correctional agency responses to rape and sexual assault in prison and juvenile detention centers; and develop written resources and training materials that address actions correctional agencies can take to improve the response to female, male, and adolescent victims of rape and sexual assault that occur during confinement. This Project has four major goals: To review and summarize major research and expert opinion about sexual assault with a focus on its applicability to the prison rape situation and to addressing the needs of prison rape victims. Topic areas will include victim concerns and barriers to reporting, mental and physical health consequences, effective mental health treatments for rape-related mental health problems, and victim-centered forensic examination protocols. To prepare training materials and protocols addressing the aforementioned topics for corrections-based victim advocates and other correctional personnel. To develop and pilot test a training curriculum based on these training materials. To foster collaboration between correctional agencies and rape crisis centers in addressing prison rape victims' services needs.
