Specialized Services for Homicide Survivors Principal Investigator: Alyssa A. Rheingold, Ph.D. <bio sketch> < e-mail> Funding Source: South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SC DPS) Dates of Project: 9/03 - 9/07 Survivors of homicide experience a wide array of negative mental health symptoms as a result of the murder of their loved one. Specialized services by professionals trained in dealing with the unique difficulties of homicide victims are rare, but can be very beneficial to these victims. Factors, such as transportation problems and difficulty accessing appropriate counseling services, may inhibit utilization of crime victim services. The present program, a collaborative effort of the NCVC and the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, is a service grant funded by the Department of Public Safety with federal Victim of Crime Acts funds. It has three major goals designed to improve services for homicide survivors in the tri-county (Charleston, Dorchester, Berkley) area: - To provide crisis intervention and information referral to survivors of homicide shortly after the loss of their loved one.
- To increase specialized services available to homicide survivors to assist in stabilizing their lives after the murder.
- To increase utilization of victim services among homicide survivors. This is a collaborative Program between the National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center and the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
