Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Intervention:
A Training Program for Students in Health Professions

Principal Investigator: Alyssa A. Rheingold, Ph.D.  <bio sketch>  < e-mail>
Funding Source:   South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SC DPS)
Dates of Project:  10/03 - 9/06

Our promotion of interagency coordination is two-pronged:

  1. Provide direct victim services. Individual victim needs and eligibilities are carefully assessed and services offered, and when warranted, referrals are made to appropriate agencies
  2. Serve as a resource for other agencies. NCVC staff network with staff members of other agencies through brief training, direct case consultation (e.g., with the Department of Social Services, Law Enforcement Agencies), and through extensive participation in local, state, and national victim advocacy organizations.

The NCVC is the primary coordinating agency providing services to rape victims in the tri-county area (Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkley counties). Under this program, the NCVC works daily with People Against Rape (the local rape crisis agency), the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at MUSC, and the Charleston, Summerville, North Charleston, and Dorchester police departments.

During the last seven years, the NCVC has also formally coordinated efforts with the following organizations in provision of direct victim services:

  • South Carolina Crime Victims Compensation Fund (NCVC volunteers and staff are sent to the MUSC hospital trauma units to visit every victim of crime and assist in the completion of their compensation application and referrals for related services)
  • National Victim Center
  • South Carolina Attorney General’s Office
  • National Organization for Victims Assistance (NOVA)
  • People Against Rape
  • My Sister’s House (a local shelter for battered women)
  • Vocational Rehabilitation
  • Continuum of Care (a state agency for the consolidation of child services)
  • Navy Family Service Center
  • Family Advocacy Program
  • Navy Investigation service
  • Several departments of the Naval Hospital including: Social Work, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry
  • Charleston Sexual Abuse Treatment Consortium
  • Department of Social Services
  • community mental health centers
  • family courts,
  • solicitors' offices
  • police and Sheriff’s departments
  • Victims/Witness programs in Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley counties
  • 1 West Treatment Center, MUSC
  • The Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina
