Graduate Psychology Education Programs: Internship in Health and Community Psychology Principal Investigator: Dean G. Kilpatrick, Ph.D. <bio sketch> < e-mail> Funding Source: Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Dates of Project: 9/02 - 4/07 South Carolina is a poor state in which many health disparities exist and there is a substantial shortage of health care professional, mental health care professionals and psychologists. The primary purpose of this project is to partially address these problems by enhancing training activities in the Charleston Consortium Clinical Psychology Internship. The objective of this project is to increase interns’ knowledge, skill, and willingness to work with underserved populations in three areas: - victims of child abuse, elder abuse, and other violence
- children with serious physical illness
- health psychology/behavioral medicine patients
The enhanced training program has two major components: - a didactic seminar series addressing the aforementioned topic areas
- clinical practicum experiences
All 15 of the Charleston Consortium interns will receive the didactic seminars, and at least 11 interns will participate in the enhanced practicum training. The Charleston Consortium is an APA-accredited, scientist-practitioner internship located in a major academic health care center which has trained over 350 interns during its 30 year history. A multidisciplinary faculty including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, pediatricians, surgeons, cardiologists, and dieticians provide the enhanced training. Evaluation focuses on changes in knowledge, skill, and willingness to serve underserved populations. Return to Current Grants |
