Dean G. Kilpatrick, Ph.D. is a Distinguished University Professor of Clinical Psychology and Director of the National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.  His primary research interests include measuring the prevalence of rape, other violent crimes, and other types of potentially traumatic events as well as assessing the mental health impact of such events.  Dr. Kilpatrick and his colleagues at the NCVC have conducted several extramurally funded studies investigating these topics using national household probability samples of adults and adolescents.  His research has been funded by a variety of federal agencies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institute of Mental Health, national Institute on Drug abuse, the National Institute of Child Health and Development, and the National Institute of Justice.  He has over 150 peer reviewed publications, over 60 book chapters and monographs, and over 450 presentations at scientific and professional meetings.  Dr. Kilpatrick was a member of two Institute of Medicine Committees: the Committee on Incorporating Research into Psychiatry Residency Training and the Committee on Veterans Compensation for Posttraumatic stress Disorder.   He has served the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies as a Board Member (1994-1997), Editor of the Journal of Traumatic Stress (1998-2005), and as President-Elect and President.  He is now Immediate Past President.  Dr. Kilpatrick has provided invited testimony on the topics of rape, sexual harassment, and compensation for PTSD to committees of the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate. He was recently awarded (2007) the Allied Profession Award for promoting crime victims' rights, services, and needs in the mental health field by the Congressional Victim's Rights Caucus.

Research interests: epidemiological approaches towards understanding the scope and mental health impact of potentially traumatic events, including natural disaster, terrorism, and violent crime; gene * environment interaction models attempting to understand risk and resilience for PTSD and depression following exposure to potentially traumatic events; using research findings to improve clinical practice and public policy
